Take Responsibility For Whatever You Do

An archer, highly dedicated to the sport, became world-famous. But fame went to his head.

One morning, an important official of a nearby town approached him with his son and requested the archer to be his tutor. Quite puffed up, the archer began to show off his skill to the little boy. When an arrow struck the bull’s eye, the archer praised himself aloud.

The second one also hit the bull’s eye and again, he cheered aloud. But when the next arrow missed the target completely, the archer angrily blamed a gust of wind.

ANSWERS

1. The archer angrily blamed a gust of wind for missing the target.

Render Sincere Service At Your Own Cost

Once, there was a sincere devotee who knelt to be initiated into discipleship by the guru. The guru whispered the sacred mantra into his ear, warning him to not reveal it to anyone.
What will happen if I do? asked the devotee.

Anyone you reveal the mantra to are going to be liberated from the bondage of ignorance and suffering, but you yourself

will be excluded from the discipleship and can suffer damnation.

No sooner had he heard those words from the guru, the devotee rushed to the marketplace, collected a large crowd around him, and repeated the sacred mantra for all to hear.

The disciples later reported this to the guru and demanded that the man be expelled from the monastery for his disobedience.

QUESTIONS

1. What was the guru’s reaction?

2. What is the implication of this story?

ANSWERS

1. The guru smiled and said, I have already expelled him from the monastery. There is no need for him to stay here any longer.

I have nothing further to teach him.

His action has shown him to be a guru in his title.

2. Our ultimate objective in life is to help others. If anyone has the tendency to do some sincere service without expecting anything in return, he is a master in his own way.
